Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Waveform Effects on Passive Bistatic Radar
Communication waveforms act as signals of opportunity for passive radars. However, these signals of opportunity suffer from range-Doppler processing losses due to their high range sidelobes and pulse-diverse waveform aspects. Signals such as the long term evolution (LTE) encode information within the phase and amplitude of the waveform. This research explores aspects of the LTE, such as the encoding scheme and bandwidth modes on passive bistatic Doppler radar. Initial results from COMPTEL—an overview
COMPTEL is presently completing the first full sky survey in MeV gamma‐ray astronomy (0.7 to 30 MeV). An overview of initial results from the survey is given: among these are the observations of the Crab and Vela pulsars with unprecedented accuracy, the observation of the black hole candidates Cyg X‐1 and Nova Persei 1992, an analysis of the diffuse Galactic continuum emission from the Galactic center region, the broad scale distribution of the 1.8 MeV line from radioactive 2 6Al, upper limits on gamma‐ray line emission from SN 1991T, observations of the three quasars 3C273, 3C279 and PKS 0528+134 and the radio galaxy Cen A, measurements of energy spectra, time histories and locations of a number of cosmic gamma‐ray bursts, and gamma‐ray and neutron emission from solar flares
PhosphoregDB: The tissue and sub-cellular distribution of mammalian protein kinases and phosphatases
BACKGROUND: Protein kinases and protein phosphatases are the fundamental components of phosphorylation dependent protein regulatory systems. We have created a database for the protein kinase-like and phosphatase-like loci of mouse that integrates protein sequence, interaction, classification and pathway information with the results of a systematic screen of their sub-cellular localization and tissue specific expression data mined from the GNF tissue atlas of mouse. RESULTS: The database lets users query where a specific kinase or phosphatase is expressed at both the tissue and sub-cellular levels. Similarly the interface allows the user to query by tissue, pathway or sub-cellular localization, to reveal which components are co-expressed or co-localized. A review of their expression reveals 30% of these components are detected in all tissues tested while 70% show some level of tissue restriction. Hierarchical clustering of the expression data reveals that expression of these genes can be used to separate the samples into tissues of related lineage, including 3 larger clusters of nervous tissue, developing embryo and cells of the immune system. By overlaying the expression, sub-cellular localization and classification data we examine correlations between class, specificity and tissue restriction and show that tyrosine kinases are more generally expressed in fewer tissues than serine/threonine kinases. CONCLUSION: Together these data demonstrate that cell type specific systems exist to regulate protein phosphorylation and that for accurate modelling and for determination of enzyme substrate relationships the co-location of components needs to be considered
Prenatal diagnosis of scalp congenital hemangiopericytoma
Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare form of vascular tumour. It consists of extensive proliferation of pericapillary cells (pericytes). The most common locations are the head and neck, lower extremities and retroperitoneum. HPC can be benign or malignant. Malignant HPC can metastasize to other areas of the body, usually to the lungs. Up to 5-10% HPCs present in childhood and 5-40% occur in the 1st year of life. We report a fetal case of HPC presenting as an ultrasound finding of a forehead mass. The decline and rise of neighbourhoods: the importance of neighbourhood governance
There is a substantial literature on the explanation of neighbourhood change. Most of this literature concentrates on identifying factors and developments behind processes of decline. This paper reviews the literature, focusing on the identification of patterns of neighbourhood change, and argues that the concept of neighbourhood governance is a missing link in attempts to explain these patterns. Including neighbourhood governance in the explanations of neighbourhood change and decline will produce better explanatory models and, finally, a better view about what is actually steering neighbourhood change
Roaring high and low: composition and possible functions of the Iberian stag's vocal repertoire
We provide a detailed description of the rutting vocalisations of free-ranging male Iberian deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus, Hilzheimer 1909), a geographically isolated and morphologically differentiated subspecies of red deer Cervus elaphus. We combine spectrographic examinations, spectral analyses and automated classifications to identify different call types, and
compare the composition of the vocal repertoire with that of other red deer subspecies. Iberian stags give bouts of roars (and more rarely, short series of barks) that are typically composed of two different types of calls. Long Common Roars are mostly given at the beginning or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a high fundamental frequency (F0) resulting in poorly defined formant frequencies but a relatively high amplitude. In contrast, Short Common Roars are typically given in the middle or at the end of the bout, and are characterised by a lower F0 resulting in relatively well defined vocal tract resonances, but low amplitude. While we did not identify entirely Harsh Roars (as described in the Scottish red
deer subspecies (Cervus elaphus scoticus), a small percentage of Long Common Roars contained segments of deterministic chaos. We suggest that the evolution of two clearly distinct types of Common Roars may reflect divergent selection pressures favouring either vocal efficiency in high pitched roars or the communication of body size in low-pitched, high spectral density roars highlighting vocal tract resonances. The clear divergence of the Iberian red deer vocal repertoire from those of other documented European red deer populations reinforces the status of this geographical variant as a distinct subspecies

About the book: Postmodern theories heralded the "death of the subject", and thereby deeply contested our intuition that we are free and willing selves. In recent times, the (free) will has come under attack yet again. Findings from the neuro- and cognitive sciences claim the concept of will to be scientifically untenable, specifying that it is our brain rather than our 'self' which decides what we want to do. In spite of these challenges however, the willing self has come to take centre stage in our society: juridical and moral practices ascribing guilt, or the organization of everyday life attributing responsibilities, for instance, can hardly be understood without taking recourse to the willing subject.
In this vein, the authors address topics such as the genealogy of the concept of willing selves, the discourse on agency in neuroscience and sociology, the political debate on volition within neoliberal and neoconservative regimes, approaches toward novel forms of relational responsibility as well as moral evaluations in conceptualizing autonomy
Transition probabilities for general birth-death processes with applications in ecology, genetics, and evolution
A birth-death process is a continuous-time Markov chain that counts the
number of particles in a system over time. In the general process with
current particles, a new particle is born with instantaneous rate
and a particle dies with instantaneous rate . Currently no robust and
efficient method exists to evaluate the finite-time transition probabilities in
a general birth-death process with arbitrary birth and death rates. In this
paper, we first revisit the theory of continued fractions to obtain expressions
for the Laplace transforms of these transition probabilities and make explicit
an important derivation connecting transition probabilities and continued
fractions. We then develop an efficient algorithm for computing these
probabilities that analyzes the error associated with approximations in the
method. We demonstrate that this error-controlled method agrees with known
solutions and outperforms previous approaches to computing these probabilities.
Finally, we apply our novel method to several important problems in ecology,
evolution, and genetics
Dust Processing and Grain Growth in Protoplanetary Disks in the Taurus-Auriga Star-Forming Region
Mid-infrared spectra of 65 T Tauri stars (TTS) taken with the Infrared
Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope are modeled using dust
at two temperatures to probe the radial variation in dust composition in the
uppermost layers of protoplanetary disks. Most spectra indicating crystalline
silicates require Mg-rich minerals and silica, but a few suggest otherwise.
Spectra indicating abundant enstatite at higher temperatures also require
crystalline silicates at temperatures lower than those required for spectra
showing high abundance of other crystalline silicates. A few spectra show 10
micron complexes of very small equivalent width. They are fit well using
abundant crystalline silicates but very few large grains, inconsistent with the
expectation that low peak-to-continuum ratio of the 10 micron complex always
indicates grain growth. Most spectra in our sample are fit well without using
the opacities of large crystalline silicate grains. If large grains grow by
agglomeration of submicron grains of all dust types, the amorphous silicate
components of these aggregates must typically be more abundant than the
crystalline silicate components. Crystalline silicate abundances correlate
positively with other such abundances, suggesting that crystalline silicates
are processed directly from amorphous silicates and that neither forsterite,
enstatite, nor silica are intermediate steps when producing either of the other
two. Disks with more dust settling typically have greater crystalline
abundances. Large-grain abundance is somewhat correlated with greater settling
of disks. The lack of strong correlation is interpreted to mean that settling
of large grains is sensitive to individual disk properties. Lower-mass stars
